How to Use Sora 2: Access, Prompts, and Examples (2026).

To use Sora 2 in mid-2026, there is one practical route left: run it through a multi-model AI studio like getvivix, because OpenAI discontinued the official Sora app on April 26, 2026. The official route — an invite-based rollout whose availability varied by region and never included free unlimited generation — closed when the app and website were shut down. The model itself is still alive: OpenAI has said the Sora API remains available until September 24, 2026, and getvivix runs Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro through that API today. No invite, no waitlist — a free account gets 30 credits on signup plus 30 more dropped daily, and every model card shows its exact credit cost before you click run.

This guide covers the whole workflow: how to access Sora 2 right now, how to write prompts the model actually responds to, ten example prompts you can copy, the mistakes that waste credits, and an honest answer to "is Sora 2 free?"

How to access Sora 2 in 2026

First, the official route, because it is the one most people search for. When Sora 2 launched, OpenAI distributed it as an invite-based app — access rolled out gradually, availability varied by region, and heavier use was gated behind subscriptions. That route is now closed: OpenAI announced in March 2026 that it was winding Sora down, the app and website were discontinued on April 26, 2026, and the API is scheduled to shut down on September 24, 2026. The full story is in our Sora discontinuation post.

The route that still works is any platform that runs Sora 2 through the API while it remains live. On getvivix that takes about two minutes:

  1. Create a free account — no card required. You get 30 credits on signup, plus 30 more dropped daily.
  2. Open the text-to-video tool or the full Studio.
  3. Pick Sora 2 or Sora 2 Pro from the model list. The exact credit cost is shown on the model card before you run anything.
  4. Write your prompt (the next section shows how), choose an aspect ratio, and click run. Sora 2 outputs up to 10 seconds at 1080p.
  5. Want to animate an existing image instead? The same model works in the image-to-video tool — upload a still, describe the motion, render.

How to write Sora 2 prompts (step by step)

Good Sora 2 prompts read like a single line from a shot list, not a pile of keywords. The formula: camera framing → subject → motion → lighting → style anchor. Here is each step.

  1. Start with the camera. Name the shot before anything else: slow dolly-in, static wide shot, handheld tracking shot, low-angle orbit, drone shot rising. Sora 2 follows camera language unusually well, and leading with it sets the whole composition.
  2. One shot per prompt. Sora 2 maxes out at 10 seconds. That is one continuous shot — not an intro, a cutaway, and a finale. If your idea needs three shots, write three prompts and edit the clips together.
  3. Use concrete motion verbs.Motion is what separates a video prompt from an image prompt. "Steam rising," "waves crashing against the rocks," "wheat bending in waves" — every prompt should contain at least one thing that visibly moves, described precisely.
  4. Light the shot.Time of day plus light direction does more for realism than the word "realistic" ever will: warm window light from the left, golden hour backlight, harsh directional sunlight, blue hour.
  5. Anchor the style — once. One anchor like "documentary style," "35mm film still," or "anamorphic lens flare" sets a coherent look. Stacking five style tags makes the model average them into mush.
  6. Keep it 30-60 words. Long enough to be specific, short enough that the model does not have to guess which details matter.

10 Sora 2 example prompts you can copy

Paste any of these into the text-to-video tool, swap the nouns for your own, and iterate by changing one variable at a time.

  1. Slow dolly-in on a ceramicist's hands shaping a bowl on a spinning wheel, wet clay glistening, warm window light from the left, shallow depth of field, documentary style, 35mm.
  2. Drone shot rising over a fog-covered pine forest at dawn, golden light breaking through the canopy, mist drifting between the trees, cinematic, muted color grade.
  3. Handheld tracking shot following a cyclist weaving through a narrow Tokyo alley at night, neon signs reflecting on wet asphalt, slight motion blur, anamorphic lens flare.
  4. Static wide shot of a lighthouse on a cliff during a storm, waves crashing against the rocks, dark teal ocean, rain streaking across the frame, moody and cinematic.
  5. Macro shot of a honeybee landing on a lavender flower, pollen drifting in the air, soft morning backlight, extreme shallow focus, nature-documentary style.
  6. Low-angle orbit around a white knight chess piece on a glass board, dramatic rim lighting, black background, slow camera movement, product-commercial style.
  7. Storm clouds rolling fast over a wheat field, the wheat bending in waves with the wind, late-afternoon golden light fading to grey, wide shot, time-lapse feel.
  8. Over-the-shoulder shot of a barista pouring latte art in a sunlit cafe, steam rising, the rosette forming in the cup, warm tones, shallow depth of field, 50mm.
  9. Slow push-in on an astronaut's visor reflecting a red desert landscape, dust drifting past, harsh directional sunlight, sci-fi film-still aesthetic.
  10. Wide establishing shot of a coastal village at blue hour, lights turning on in windows one by one, gentle waves below, soft film grain, quiet and melancholic.

Common Sora 2 prompt mistakes

  • Writing a scene list instead of a shot."A man wakes up, walks to the station, and boards a train" is three shots crammed into ten seconds. You will get a confused blend of all three. One prompt, one shot.
  • Prompting like it's an image model. A prompt with no motion in it produces a near-static clip. If nothing in your prompt moves, add the movement before you add more adjectives.
  • Expecting dialogue or sound. Sora 2 renders on getvivix are video only — clips come out silent. Plan to pair the footage with a voice or music model, and check the model card for current capabilities since these can change.
  • Keyword soup."Epic, cinematic, 8K, masterpiece, trending, hyperrealistic" tells the model nothing about the shot. One style anchor plus real lighting detail beats six buzzwords.
  • Re-rolling instead of revising. If a render misses, change exactly one variable — the camera move, the light, the style anchor — and run again. Random re-rolls burn credits without teaching you what went wrong.
  • Ignoring the format. Decide the aspect ratio before you render: vertical for TikTok and Shorts, widescreen for YouTube. Cropping after the fact throws away composition the model worked to build.

Is Sora 2 free?

Officially, it never was — the Sora app was invite-based and tied to subscriptions, with no free unlimited tier, and that question became moot when the app was discontinued in April 2026.

On getvivix, you can test Sora 2 without paying: a free account takes a minute, needs no card, and comes with 30 credits on signup plus 30 more dropped every day. Each model card shows exactly what a render costs before you click. If you outgrow the free drip, paid plans are $10 (Standard), $15 (Pro), or $50 (Ultimate) per 30 days — no watermark on any tier, and paid plans include a commercial-use license. After September 2026: your prompts outlive the model

The Sora API is scheduled to shut down on September 24, 2026, and getvivix will run it until then. The good news is that nothing in this guide is Sora-specific at heart. The same formula — camera, subject, motion, light, style anchor — works on Google Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0, Runway Gen-4.5, Seedance 2.0, and Wan 2.7, all of which live in the same model list. Our Sora 2 vs Veo 3.1 vs Kling 3.0 comparison runs the same prompt through each, and the full lineup is on the model catalog. Learn the prompting once and the model becomes a dropdown choice, not a dependency.

Frequently asked

Is Sora 2 free?

Not on the official side — OpenAI's Sora app was invite-based, tied to subscriptions, and was discontinued on April 26, 2026. On getvivix you can test Sora 2 free: 30 credits on signup plus 30 dropped daily, no card required, with the exact credit cost shown on the model card before you run it.

How do I get access to Sora 2?

The official app is no longer an option — it was discontinued in April 2026. getvivix runs Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro through the API while it remains available (OpenAI has set September 24, 2026 as the API shutdown date). Sign up free, open the text-to-video tool, and pick Sora 2 from the model list — no invite or waitlist.

What makes a good Sora 2 prompt?

One shot, described like a director would: camera framing first, then the subject with one or two concrete details, then specific motion verbs, then lighting and a single style anchor. Around 30-60 words is the sweet spot.

Can Sora 2 do audio?

As run on getvivix, Sora 2 generates video only — clips render silent, so pair the footage with a voice or music model for sound. Capabilities can change between API versions, so check OpenAI's official documentation and the model card for the current state.

What are the best Sora 2 alternatives?

Google Veo 3.1 and Kling 3.0 are the closest in quality, with Runway Gen-4.5, Seedance 2.0, and Wan 2.7 close behind. All of them run inside getvivix, so you can A/B the same prompt across several models before committing to one.

Ready to try it? Open the getvivix text-to-video tool — sign up free (30 credits plus 30 daily, no card), pick Sora 2 from the model list, and paste any prompt from this guide. And if Sora 2 isn't the right fit for a shot, the same prompt runs on 100+ other models without leaving the page.
